Scientists working with the Large Hadron Collider announced the receipt of new evidence of its existence

With the help of the Large Hadron Collider, the researchers were able to obtain new evidence for the existence of a record heavy boson, the existence of which contradicts the Standard Model of physics. As the participants of the CMS collaboration, working with the collider, stated, the new data state with great accuracy that the LHC previously actually recorded a weak signal near 750 gigaelectronvolts, which may indicate the decay of a heavy particle into two gamma photons.

The first rumors about the existence of a particle that does not fit into the Standard Model, but corresponds to some theories within the so-called "New Physics", appeared at the end of last year. Some time after information about a potential discovery leaked to the Internet, it was partially confirmed by specialists working with two detectors of the Large Hadron Collider - CMS and ATLAS. As it became known then, experiments on the recently updated LHC led to the appearance of "extra" pairs of photons with an energy of 750 gigaelectronvolts. However, physicists immediately agreed that the results obtained require careful verification.

This time, the scientists announced their discovery more confidently - the new data, they said, indicate that the signal received by the two LHC detectors was not an error or a coincidence. If the existence of a particle is finally confirmed, it will become an absolute record holder in terms of its mass, many times exceeding in this indicator both the Higgs boson and the previous “record holder” - the top quark.

The Standard Model is a construction that describes the electromagnetic, weak and strong interactions of all elementary particles. It builds a huge representation of modern scientific ideas about the world, but today it is becoming more and more obvious that in some aspects it is inaccurate. In particular, the discovery, for which the Canadian Arthur MacDonald and the Japanese Takaaki Kajita were awarded the Nobel Prize last year, indirectly implies the existence of mass in neutrinos, which contradicts the Standard Model. The new boson could be another proof of the imperfection of this system of assumptions.
