In the neighboring dwarf galaxy the Large Magellanic Cloud, in the Tarantula Nebula (a region of star formation) at a distance of 163 thousand light years from Earth, there is the star VFTS 102 - the fastest rotating massive star known to science. Only neutron stars revolve faster than it.

Its rotation speed exceeds 500 kilometers per second, which is 100 times faster than that of the Sun. The centrifugal forces generated by the dizzying speed of rotation gave the star a flattened shape and generated a disk of hot plasma, clearly visible from the hypothesized planet there.

According to astronomers, the reason for this speed was the merging of two stars into one. Calculations showed that the progenitor was a double star, the components of which gradually approached, exchanging stellar matter with each other. At some point, they became a close binary system, and then merged into one massive, rapidly rotating star.

VFTS 102 is not visible to the naked eye, although it has a great brightness and exceeds the Sun in luminosity by 5 times.
