Recently, the famous scientist Stephen Hawking, as well as his colleagues Malcolm Perry and Andrew Strominger, proposed a new theory that helps answer the question of what happens to information that falls into a black hole. As physicists suggest, some of this information comes out in the form of photons with almost zero energy. However, not all representatives of the world scientific community found this version plausible.

Czech scientist Lubos Motl, who specializes in string theory, criticized the new theory. According to him, the idea of Hawking, Perry and Strominger is based on the assumption that the processes occurring in black holes can be spoken of in the language of local quantum field theory. However, such a thought obviously contradicts the accumulated scientific information, writes Motl in his blog.

Lubos Motl argues that research carried out in the past decade testifies to the fact that the principle of causality, on which all processes in the rest of the Universe are based, is violated inside a black hole in an unknown way. However, the new theory does not take this into account, as well as some features of space-time near the event horizon.

Motl acknowledges that Hawking, Perry, and Strominger are outstanding scientists, but he emphasizes that science, by its very nature, should not be based on respect for authorities.

The new theory is a development of the idea previously put forward by Stephen Hawking, according to which black holes gradually evaporate, giving rise to the so-called Hawking radiation. The question remains, what happens to the information about the evaporated particles, which is "erased" at the moment of their absorption by the black hole, but cannot completely disappear according to the laws of quantum physics. It is this information, according to the new assumption of Hawking and his colleagues, that is emitted in the form of so-called "soft" photons with such low energy that modern equipment can hardly detect them. These photons form the "soft hair" of the black hole. They are so named because by their existence they refute the "no hair theorem", according to which all black holes with the same mass, charge and rotation speed will look exactly the same.
