American doctors try unsuccessfully to diagnose a patient with an unusual symptom
15-year-old American Calviño Inman puzzled doctors: red drops appear in his eyes several times a day. The teenager was even forced to speak on television with an appeal to doctors to cure him of strange bloody tears.
However, for now, they are at a loss: bloody tears are extremely rare and are caused either by injury or infection, but Inman's disease occurred for no apparent reason. The teenager underwent magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, ultrasound and other studies, but they failed to make a diagnosis. The student's bloody tears appear three times a day, and the bleeding can last up to one hour. As the teenager himself says, sometimes they feel like ordinary tearing, and sometimes they are accompanied by a burning sensation in the eyes. Bloody tears sometimes overtake Inman at school, and most of his classmates consider Inman “possessed by the devil.
According to ophthalmologist Rex Hamilton, Calvigno may suffer from a rare phenomenon known to science as hemolacria, which is accompanied by the release of bloody tears.
“This is a very rare occurrence. The term itself is descriptive only. The reasons for this phenomenon are not yet known to science,”the doctor says.
