Wildfires in southern California threaten residents of one of Los Angeles' wealthiest neighborhoods. Residents are being evacuated in the Bel Air area. Forced evacuations have been announced in several areas due to strong winds helping to spread the flames.
California fire chief Ken Pimlott said it was impossible to fight a fire in such winds. The state's fire threat has been raised to the highest, purple.

The highest death toll - 11 people - was noted in Sonoma County. County authorities say 155 people are missing here, although this may be due to the chaotic evacuation of residents.
In the center of the county, the city of Santa Rosa, fire destroyed the Hilton Hotel and the mobile home parking lot. Tens of thousands of the county's residents fled their homes.
