The Hong Kong Correctional Service is committed to improving the security of its prisons with high technology. According to Commissioner Danny Wu Ying-ming, several correctional colonies will soon be equipped with smart cameras. Also, prisoners of criminals will be under constant control thanks to bracelets that track their location and heart rate. Moreover, special robots will appear in prisons that will perform dirty work in the truest sense of the word.

The new technologies will be designed to improve the safety of both security guards and prisoners themselves. Initially, they will be tested in three prisons. If they prove effective, the smart equipment will be extended to other places of detention. The authorities probably want to equip all their prisons with them.

Artificial intelligence cameras are planned to be installed in bathrooms. To maintain privacy, some areas of the footage will be shaded. The system will monitor and detect abnormal behavior of prisoners such as fights and painful attacks.

The bracelets will transmit information about the location of each criminal to the guards. They will also monitor their heartbeat and notify workers about health problems. Most likely, this system will help prevent escape, murder and sudden death of prisoners.

By "robot", prison officials mean a mechanical arm that will search for smuggled drugs in the waste. At the moment, this dirty work is forced by the prison staff themselves.
