British archaeologist Alfred Mordsley (1850–1931) became famous for being the first to photograph and sketch ancient cities in Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras in the 19th century. He explored such Mayan cities as Quirigua, Tikal, Copan, Palenque, Chichen Itza, etc.

Numerous photos from his expeditions have survived, which you can see in this post. Interestingly, some of the objects depicted in these photos have not survived to this day, unlike photographs.

Today I am posting a photo of this archaeologist taken in Guatemala, and in the following posts you will see his photo from Honduras and Mexico.

Interestingly, a couple of years ago, information appeared in the media that the British Museum was going to digitize the previously closed Mordsley collection, but it never appeared on the museum's website. It is curious what you can see in these photos that are not yet available to us …
