Amelia Earhart was a famous American aviator and writer. This aviation pioneer became the first woman to fly the Atlantic Ocean on her own. She has written many popular books and significantly influenced the appearance in the world of a large number of female pilots who fly on an equal footing with men. Several space objects have been named after Amelia Earhart, as well as many vehicles, awards, events and institutions.
In 1937, 39-year-old Amelia attempted a perilous round-the-world flight in a light twin-engined Lockheed Model 10 Electra aircraft, but failed. The aircraft disappeared without a trace in the central Pacific Ocean, near Howland Island. Neither the wreckage of the airplane, nor the bodies of Earhart herself and her navigator were found. Life, career and the mysterious (still not solved) disappearance of the pilot to this day attract the attention of historians.
The missing were searched for by many warships, including the battleship Colorado and the largest aircraft carrier at the time, Lexington, as well as 66 aircraft. The official version says that Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan fell into the ocean, where they died. Another hypothesis is that the Empire of Japan secretly shot down an American plane and captured the couple, after which they executed her in Garapana prison during World War II. Now the researchers have a new theory of the deaths of Earhart and Noonan, and this version will seem even worse to some.
The crab version cannot be considered absolutely correct
Experts report that the pilot and navigator may have survived the plane crash and were on a remote desert island for a short time. Exhausted without water and food, the Americans could become victims of very unexpected enemies - giant coconut crabs that live in the western parts of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The length of such arthropods can exceed one meter, and the weight can be more than 5 kilograms. If desired, an especially large adult is able to bite a person's hand in the hand. Land coconut crabs, also known as palm thieves, prefer to eat the flesh of coconuts, but these creatures are omnivorous. Sometimes they devour carrion, other crustaceans and even small animals, and in the video below you can see how such a monster can easily cope with a seagull. Even if Amelia and Fred died before the palm thieves got to them, the crabs could well eat the remains of the unfortunate and take them away throughout the island, as they often do.
Experts are still hoping to find the skeletons of the missing, but if coconut crabs are indeed involved, it may unfortunately not be possible.
