In his opinion, the Olympic was damaged back in 1911 when it was rammed by the British armored cruiser Hawk while the Titanic and Olympic were sailing in parallel.
However, according to Gardiner, Olympic was blamed for the collision. White Stars insurers refused to pay monetary compensation for damage. At that time, the liner made only four trips, and if he really was to blame for the incident, the company would have suffered huge losses.
Thus, Robin claims that the company traded the damaged Olympic for a new Titanic, which was soon to sail to New York.
