In Ireland, archaeologists from the IT Sligo research project have unearthed a strange megalithic object that is unlike any previously found monument in this country.
According to TheJournal.ie, excavations were carried out in the heart of the megalithic site of Carrowmore near the town of Sligo. It is home to the largest cemetery with tombs dating from around 3600 BC.
One of the ancient burial mounds and excavated by archaeologists. They were convinced that they were studying another tomb. However, it turned out that this was not a mound at all. Archaeologists still find it difficult to define the found monument, since it has no analogues.
“At the moment, we can only say one thing: we have a rather mysterious prehistoric monument, and this is something completely new for us,” says one of the leaders of the work, Dr. Marion Dowd. - Our excavations have shown that this monument is not a mound. And so far we cannot draw a parallel with other monuments in Ireland."
Judging by the description of archaeologists, the object was a kind of elevation made of large round stones. A ditch surrounded him. Inside the structure, a depression was found with soil saturated with coal.
Several prehistoric tools, scrapers and blades made of solid stone have been found in the site and around it. They were probably used for processing animal skins, butchering and cooking food, carving bones, and making baskets.
“We have collected a large collection of prehistoric instruments,” says Dr. Dowd. “We are now focused on analyzing all materials recovered during the excavation. We hope that in the next few months we will be able to date them more accurately."
