Diver Igor Demidenko told My Planet where the mysterious sounds that frightened divers in the Red Sea come from.
Recently, the world mass media were full of headlines about the mysterious "chilling" sounds emanating from the depths of the Red Sea near the popular resort of Hurghada and the town of Abu Ramada. Demidenko said that he saw the source of the noise with his own eyes.
He noted that in order to understand the reason for the mysterious sounds, you need to dive deep enough. It was during the technical diving courses that Demidenko and his friend Mikhail Stepanov took at one of the dive sites of Abu Ramada. The courses were taught by Sergey Kurikov, and he was assisted by Andrey Golobokov, now both deceased.
During the courses, divers had to dive to 20, 40 and 75 m. The chosen place was perfect for this. Andrei promised his wards a "funky" show - anchors cemetery.
“After gradually completing all the exercises at 20 and 40 meters, we moved on to deeper dives. Earlier we heard a small monotonous sound, we asked Andrey what it was, - he just smiled slyly,”Demidenko says.
And so, when it came to diving to 50 m, divers suddenly found themselves in a space that looked like a bamboo forest. It was a cluster of five dozen hemp ropes stretching from the bottom.
“The sound, incomprehensible, kept growing, we approached a detached underwater rock, which somehow resembled a bald head. Andrei christened it simply and with meaning: Bald Mountain,”the diver continues.
“It’s a sight to see, the corals were blooming, and their larvae went like snow. It is light at this depth in the Red Sea, but the “snow” from the corals created its effect: twilight, snow, Bald Mountain and this rattle,”he says.

Divers noticed that one of the ropes looked strange: at a depth of about 40 m, it "broke in a loop" and walked back, and at a depth of 60 meters it rubbed against itself.
In addition to the hemp, steel wires were woven into this rope - and they are the reason for the "heartbreaking groans," explained Demidenko.
Later, even on deeper dives, Russian divers found several more of the same “groaning” ropes.
“And the presence of this wealth there, at the bottom, Andrey explained to us simply: on Arab bots it is not customary to tie an anchor rope to the bot itself, and from the economy they take only 50-60 m of hemp. She is dumped into a hatch in the bow, and the anchor lies on the deck. When the bottom is visible through the water column, it means that the depth is 25–35 m, and at a greater depth, the anchor is not released. In this place of Abu Ramada, the boat very quickly carries away from the shore by the current and the wave, and the gape sailor, releasing the anchor at a depth of 20 meters, simply does not have time to wind the rope on the bollard, when the depth increases to 75, and the anchor sinks to the bottom together with the rope , - said the diver.
