In Mexico, a team of archaeologists have discovered an ancient stone sanctuary of the Aztecs at the bottom of a lake at the foot of the Istaxihuatl volcano. The nature of the structure suggests that it served as a model for the universe, according to the International Business Times.
The sanctuary was discovered by researchers from the National Institute of Anthropology and History at an altitude of about four thousand meters at the bottom of the lake. The sanctuary is lined with stones of different sizes, and their arrangement follows the arrangement of stars and galaxies.
In addition, the sanctuary is designed in such a way that when you look at it, an optical effect is observed: the stones seem to be floating on the surface of the water, and not lying at the bottom.
“The optical effect and structure of the object suggests that this place was a miniature model of the Universe, the ancient understanding of time and space. It is also consistent with Aztec creation myths. According to them, in ancient times there was no land. The sea monster Cipactli lived in the primeval ocean, and then the gods created heaven and earth from its torso,”said archaeologist Iris del Rocío Hernandez Bautista.
