The two most famous Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in recent times have occurred in Europe. The first began on February 11, 1858 in Massabile, near the village of Lourdes in the south of France. On that day, 14-year-old shepherdess Bernadette Soubirou saw at the entrance to the grotto a luminous white figure resembling a girl in all white.
She appeared to Bernadette 18 more times and in the end was called "the immaculate conception", which, according to the interpretation of the local priest, gives her away as the Holy Virgin Mary. During the ninth apparition, a figure in white told Bernadette to dig out the ground in a grotto, and she found a key there, which is said to have healing powers. The apparitions of the Mother of God are as frequent as crying and bleeding objects.
Bernadette died in 1879 and was later canonized. Lourdes today is a place of mass pilgrimage for the afflicted from all over the world, and many are miraculously healed.
Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Portugal
On May 13, 1917, three children who were herding sheep in the vicinity of the Portuguese town of Fatima witnessed the first of six apparitions of a glittering woman under a tree. She told Jacinte and Francisco Marteau and Lucier dos Santos that she would appear until October on the 13th of every month. The rumor of the visions of the children spread quickly, and every month, on the appointed day, they were accompanied by some.
The sun turned on its axis two or three times, emitting multicolored rotating beams of light. Then it rushed to the ground, closer and closer to the stunned spectators, but immediately abruptly changed course and returned to its place. Then the audience noticed that their clothes had just been wet through - dry. Of course, outside of Fatima no one saw the jump of the sun.
