Japanese scientists have concluded that the first blood group is associated with an almost three-fold increase in the risk of death from severe injuries compared to other blood groups. The research is published in the journal Critical Care.
Experts have shown that in patients with the first blood group, who have received injuries that threaten an early death or a long recovery period, the probability of mortality is on average 28 percent. And for victims with other blood groups - 11 percent.
Scientists see the reasons for the observed connection in the fact that people with the first blood group have a higher risk of blood loss due to worse blood clotting, compared with the owners of the other groups. This circumstance, according to experts, is associated with a low blood level of the first group of von Willebrand factor (blood plasma glycoprotein).
“Our study also raises the question of how an emergency transfusion of type 1 red blood cells in severely injured patients can affect hemostasis - the process by which bleeding stops, and whether there is any difference when compared to other blood types,” explained the co-author Wataru Takayama.
