Scientists are confident that trees can produce gasoline, or more precisely, not the fuel itself, but the basis for it.
The study showed that the most common algae Botryococcus braunii contains a necessary protein that promotes the production of combustible materials, which, in turn, can then be used to make various types of fuel, analogues of gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene and others.
Botryococcus braunii grows in water at any temperature and in different regions of the earth. Their hydrocarbon fuels could be used instead of oil, but the problem is that algae produce too little of them.
In this regard, the researchers tried to find a way to increase the production of biofuels. And it turned out that it is possible to regulate the production of hydrocarbons with the help of the “lycopoctane synthase” gene introduced into any plants.
If scientists manage to bring the idea to life, then gasoline can be grown directly on trees.
