Burebista was the king of the Getae and Dacians. Throughout his kingdom, he led an active policy of conquest.
In 60 BC. e. he defeated the Celtic tribes on the Danube, thus clearly marking the primacy of the Dacians in the region.
From 55 BC e. and probably up to 48 BC. e Burebista fought a series of wars with the Greek city-states on the Black Sea coast, expanding his state up to the Balkans.
Strabo also mentions the Burebista expeditions against the Celts who lived among the Thracians and Illyrians.
Constant wars with the Greeks. The only Greek city-state with which Burebista kept warm relations would be Dionysopolis. According to sources, one of the most influential inhabitants of this city was the first adviser to the Dacian king.
At the height of its power, the Burebist empire stretched from the modern Slovak Carpathians to the Balkans and the nearby Danube. Strabo claims that the Dacians could easily put up an army of 200,000 soldiers, which was an incredible figure for those times.
In 48 BC. Burebista sided with Pompey in his fight against Julius Caesar. But Pompey lost the civil war, and Caesar, having become the winner, planned to send his legions to Dacia, but death in 44 AD. BC e. prevented him from doing so.
Burebista was assassinated by conspirators from the tribal aristocracy who believed that consolidation into a centralized state would destroy all local power. After his death, the empire was the empire fell apart.
