Scientists have discovered several hundred "stone portals" of unknown purpose in Saudi Arabia, according to Newsweek magazine.

The objects are located on the territory of desert lava fields in the Kharrat-Khaybar highlands. To date, about 400 round and rectangular buildings have been found. The smallest stone structure is 13 meters long, the largest is 518 meters.

According to Oxford professor David Kennedy, their age can reach several thousand years. The specialist noted that the Bedouins call these constructions "the creation of ancient people."

“There is no explanation for these strange, unwieldy objects. Almost 400 buildings are now known, in some areas there are a lot of them. Obviously, they were very important for those who built them,”the scientist said.

It is noted that similar "portals" were previously found in other countries of the Middle East, however, Kennedy believes that the structures discovered in Harrat-Khaibar are much older than previous finds.

The results of the study of the "stone portals" will be published in the journal Arabian Archeology and Epigraphy, the article says.
