Kaliningrad scientists are trying to find out why the water in one of the local reservoirs does not freeze even in winter

“Today a scientific expedition set off to the mysterious ice-free lake in the Gvardeisky district. The reasons for the abnormally high temperatures in the water of the quarry have not yet been clarified,”the local TV channel said.

It explains that the water temperature in the lake is plus six degrees Celsius, despite the fact that a stable "minus" has been established in the region for a long time (in January, on some days, the thermometer dropped to minus 20 degrees).

The plot contains the opinions of Kaliningrad scientists who are trying to explain why such a "plus" temperature is kept in the lake in winter. One of the versions: lake water is "diluted" with domestic wastewater, which "raises the degree".

However, Oleg Novozhilov, deputy dean of the Faculty of Bioresources and Nature Management of the Kaliningrad State Technical University (KSTU), does not adhere to this point of view.

“The first thing in our minds when we see open waters is that there is a wastewater discharge somewhere. But here, thank God, it doesn't smell like sewage in the literal and figurative sense!”- said Novozhilov.

As noted in the plot, the scientists failed to conduct the necessary studies of the water on the spot, so samples were taken for further analysis already in laboratory conditions.

In addition, scientists do not exclude that they will be able to find a special "living creature" in the non-freezing Kaliningrad lake.

“There may be interesting animals that we have not seen in ordinary water bodies, which can wait out the unfavorable season here,” - the commentary of the assistant professor of the Department of Ichthyology and Ecology of KSTU Maria Shibaeva is given in the plot.

So far, only the larvae of chironomids, better known as dergun mosquitoes, have been found in the Kaliningrad region called "greenbacks" because of their characteristic color.
