In Estonia, workers during road construction work stumbled upon a wooden ship buried underground, on board of which they unexpectedly found objects of the 20th century.
According to ERR News, the wooden ship was found near Tallinn harbor, which is located on the Baltic Sea coast. Archaeologists were invited to the site. They concluded that this ship probably sank at the end of the 15th century.
It was possible to establish the age by traces of the use of primitive firearms, found during the examination of the vessel. Scientists were surprised that there were objects of the XX century on board the ship. So, a modern metal cable was attached to its nose.
In addition, archaeologists have uncovered an intact canned food can with an expiration date that, according to the surviving markings, expired in 1972. However, Estonian scientists have an explanation.
They believe that the ship has spent many centuries at the bottom. However, in Soviet times, it was allegedly lifted from there and moved to another location, since it probably interfered with shipping or some kind of construction work. It was then, during transportation, that the workers forgot the cable and canned food on board.
To test this hypothesis, the researchers intend to find and interview eyewitnesses of those events, for example, people who worked in the 1960s in a local port. Perhaps one of them will remember how the mysterious ship was moved.
In addition, the scientists will create a 3D model of the ship and take wood samples from it. Their research will clarify the age and origin of the ship.
