Global warming, the threat of which has long been trumpeted by environmentalists and climatologists, seems to have reached the stage when the processes of climate change launched by human activity have become irreversible. Scientists predict that by the end of the twentieth century, the sea level will rise by 1.5 meters. And even this relatively small increase in the water level is quite enough to leave every fifth person on Earth without a home.
But the world's oceans, fed by rapidly melting glaciers, will not stop there. However, scientists prefer not to predict that far, concentrating on closer prospects.
In addition to anthropogenic factors of global warming, not the least role in this process belongs to nature itself, which, as noted by Leonid Zhindarev, an employee of the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University, performs periodic transformations every several thousand years.
“Carbon dioxide is generated not only by industry and transport, but also by the world's oceans. And in volumes that people never dreamed of. So the planet, one might say, itself covers itself with a gas shell, which serves as a kind of greenhouse,”says Zhindarev.
