An acquaintance of mine, Mistress A., dreamed one night that she was dead. Allegedly, her soul separated from her body, freely left the walls of the house, passed the neighboring streets and finally found herself in the bedroom of her close friend, Miss L. M. She entered into a conversation with her, the content of which she could not remember well afterwards.

The first words of Mrs. A. upon awakening the next morning were: "So I haven't died after all?" When her husband asked what this strange exclamation meant, she told him her night vision (if it was a vision).

The foregoing took place on Wednesday night, and Mrs A. was expecting Miss LM to visit her next Friday. The colonel demanded from his wife a promise that she would not write or even get in touch with the young lady mentioned before the latter arrived, and Mrs. A. gave her husband her word of honor not to do so.

Until now, the whole incident had nothing extraordinary in itself and seemed to be one of the phenomena common during sleep. True, people do not always dream that they see themselves, but who will determine the boundaries of the area in which the sleeping person's fantasy hovers?

The continuation of this story is surprising …

On Friday, Colonel A. and his wife met Miss L. M. It should be noted that this person has been ghosts since childhood. Neither the colonel nor his wife made the slightest hint of what interested them so strongly, and a little later the three of them went out into the garden with their guest. Here the ladies started talking about a new hat, and Mistress A. said, "My last hat was with purple trim, I love this color so much that I think I'll choose it again for the hat." “Yes,” a friend answered her, “I know that this is your color.” "How so?" - asked Mrs. A. “I know this because when you appeared to me at night - wait, when was that? - and, I remembered, the day before yesterday, - you were wearing a purple dress " Did I appear to you at night? " - “Yes, about three o'clock, and we struck up a conversation. Don't you remember that?"

These words convinced both the colonel and his wife that the imaginary trip to Woolwich was not an ordinary imagination working in a dream.

This was the only such incident with Colonel A. Her husband is now in India as a brigade commander, and she often desires that her spirit may visit him during sleepless nights. At one time she hoped that she would succeed, but the desire and expectation were in vain. Unexpectedly, the phenomenon did happen, but it did not happen again, which was eagerly awaited and passionately desired. Consequently, the above case cannot be explained by the expectation of the arrival of the guest.

This story was told to me by Mrs A. in February 1859. and confirmed a few days later by Miss LM, who had received an overnight visit.
