How man and mouse became minerals
One English chemist, who hated mice, suddenly became deeply in love with them. And there was a reason. Whoever from the inhabitants of the Swedish miners' village of Folun would have thought that one day in the light of God they would get the body of a man out of an old abandoned mine, completely transformed into a sparkling gold brass-yellow pyrite (sulfur pyrite) - a mineral widespread in those parts (!). According to the classical laws of crystallography, the mineral staurolite is formed, as if composed of the smallest Catholic crosses. Many geologists smile skepticallyhaving heard the legend that staurolite is the petrified tears of angels who mourned the death of Jesus Christ on Calvary.
Inexplicable
There are things that are completely incredible. Once in Crimea, the author of these lines happened to see some mysterious creature, similar to a large bumblebee, but buried in a mineral … chalcedony! By all laws and concepts, a bumblebee could not fly and even simply exist in liquid magma! Zoologists-paleoentomologists, who examined this rare specimen, came to the conclusion that the insect, although not very well, was preserved. The head, antennae, body, wings were visible. How he managed it is unknown!
Walled up but alive?
A certain F. Barton, a resident of Coventry (England), once managed to observe how a block of stone was rolling down the slope, falling apart. One of the fragments interested Barton in something, and he decided to split it into smaller pieces. Imagine the surprise of the Englishman when a live toad jumped out of the split piece! Burton brought the stone shards and the toad home and showed them to his wife. She, in turn, told about the incident to a friend who was engaged in witchcraft. The woman immediately said that one of the debris brought by her husband was a toad stone that saved people from a fire. Two years later, a fire broke out in Coventry. Many houses were damaged, but Barton's dwelling, although it was in the epicenter of the raging flames, remained unharmed!
In 1899, someone named Charles Dawson brought from the Lewis quarry (Sussex, England) the mineral chalcedony split in half with a perfectly preserved mummy … of a frog inside it! The most striking thing was that this chalcedony was formed from a hot silica-oxygen gel that rose through the cracks in the earth's crust! How the amphibian got there, no one can explain to this day.
