On the NASA website, a vacancy has been opened for a "planetary protection officer" who will be paid up to 187 thousand dollars a year to protect other planets from terrestrial biological material and vice versa.
The officer's responsibilities will include directing planetary defense and ensuring the implementation of its program in the framework of NATO space missions.
This will affect missions in which organisms and organic material from the Earth can "intentionally or unintentionally" get to other planets, and missions that involve the return of spaceships to Earth with samples of extraterrestrial objects of study inside.
The ideal candidate should have at least a year of work in a high position in a government agency, understand everything related to planetary defense, have sufficient engineering and technical experience and be ready for constant travel.
In addition, he will have to have diplomatic skills and be able to make decisions that are beneficial to all following very complex multilateral discussions.
As Business Insider notes, only NASA and the European Space Agency have such a full-time position.
