Scientists managed to find a gene, when turned on, life will increase up to 60%. Yeast cells became the object of research, but experts are sure that they are on the way to developing methods for extending human life.

For the experiment, the scientists used cells of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In the course of a number of experiments, they managed to obtain more than 4.5 thousand modified yeast, for this, certain changes were made to their genetic code. As it turned out, 238 genes have a direct impact on the lifespan of a given organism.

According to scientists, deactivation of the LOS1 gene plays the role of a "stimulator" of life for yeast cells by 60%. In the course of the experiments, the specialists were guided by the replication period. During this period of time, the mother cell retains the ability to divide.

“We are confident that our developments in this area will help to thoroughly study all the genetic factors on which the lifespan of living organisms depends. Under the most daring assumptions, mankind will be able to obtain the key to immortality through this,”the scientists told the specialized publication Cell Metabolism.
