There are various legends and beliefs about the origin of such unusual stones, many of which, by the way, are impressive in size - from 1.5 to 2 meters in diameter. Someone believes that this is nothing more than traces of alien life, the remains of ancient alien ships. Someone relies on the opinion of scientists, explaining the origin of boulders as a consequence of the cementing of fine-grained rocks such as sand or clay.
Official science classifies the boulders of Moeraki as a geological formation called a geodan - a closed cavity in some sedimentary or volcanic rocks. The age of the natural miracle is, according to researchers, at least 60 million years.
All stones have a different structure - some of them are perfectly smooth … Others - like a tortoise shell, rough. Some are split into pieces or with huge cracks. The boulders are hollow and crystalline inside.

A similar natural creation can be found in Israel and other parts of the world. It is also known as "watermelons of Elijah the Prophet." New Zealand boulders are probably the largest known to date.
