The mystery of ghosts, ghosts, spirits and other otherworldly entities is as old as the human race itself. Guests from other worlds (spaces, dimensions) have been heroes of mystical stories since ancient times, from the Bible to Shakespeare's tragedies.
Even a special genre of "ghost stories" has emerged that stands out clearly from all the paranormal. This is understandable, because we are talking about death, about the transcendental existence after it, about mortal and immortal souls, that is, about what has always worried people.
In the very idea of the deceased's existence in the form of an ethereal spirit, many find consolation - who does not want to believe that a loved one continues, albeit a different, but still life! To believe that not everything ends with earthly life and that there is not darkness and oblivion ahead, but some other, albeit incomprehensible existence.
Moreover, this belief has always been supported by the experience of many people and evidence of the appearance of certain ghostly creatures not from somewhere, but "from there."
According to Carl Jung's theory, parapsychology considers ghosts to be the product of both conscious and unconscious activities of the human mind, individual or collective. At the same time, Jung makes a clear distinction between the concepts of "ghost" and "vision".
The vision is not tied to a place and is usually for a specific purpose: to inform about the death of a loved one, and to warn of danger, to deliver a request for help. The vision is always "human", it is not frightening. But the ghost is something not of this world. Upon meeting with him, a person feels a sepulchral cold, and the heart is shackled by horror.
And if a vision carries some particle of life, then a ghost is just a moving shell. The most frightening thing about such a phantom is its subordination to some unclear goal: it is not driven by a particle of the human psyche, but by some incomprehensible, and therefore even more frightening, "fixed idea."

The study of ghosts is almost always problematic, in part because there is no universally accepted definition for them. Some consider ghosts to be the spirits of the dead, who for some reason "got lost" on their way to another world. Others believe that ghosts are a kind of telepathic entity, projected into the real world from our own imaginations. Still others believe that ghosts are poltergeists stuck between two worlds - the otherworldly and the real.
Of course, all these are only versions and to talk about it is like talking about different kinds of fairies, gnomes or dragons. Or such a question: if ghosts are the souls of people, then why do they appear clothed, why do they see such mundane, purely mundane objects as hats, suits, dresses and jewelry on them? There are enough questions, but very few answers.
If we are talking about the deceased, then his ghost is a person who, after death, is still held by the material world and is always close to him in his etheric body. The reasons for this condition are different. Very often, a person simply refuses to admit the fact of his own death (or does not even know about it in case of sudden death) and continues to live in his usual environment, as if nothing had happened.
In other cases, he cannot get used to the idea of parting with objects, events and habits that accompanied him during his lifetime. And only in rare cases does the deceased understand what happened and wants to change the situation, but does not know at all how to do it, and is waiting for something or someone.
Many messages are directly related to the appearance of the souls of living people. An eyewitness at some point sees in front of him the ghost of a relative or friend who is in trouble or is dying. This person himself may be quite far away. As a rule, such ghosts appear only once.
Very often you can find references to the fact that ghosts appear to perform some task that they did not manage to complete during their lifetime, for example, to commit retribution, and perhaps even punish for their death. If so, then it can be assumed that some ghosts have intelligence and intelligence. Which, in turn, gives the right to talk about the incorruptibility of the human spirit.
Of course, ghosts do not always pursue the goal of revenge. On the contrary, very often they come into contact with the living in order to comfort their relatives or to correct some kind of injustice. For example, they can return a stolen item to its owner. In addition, a phantom may appear to warn of a hazard. At the same time, as eyewitnesses say, he prefers to convey a message using gestures.
Treasures or money hidden during life do not allow the soul to find peace. Therefore, it is not uncommon for a deceased person to appear on earth in the form of a phantom to indicate a certain cache or treasure. Bad deeds done among people also do not contribute to finding peace, so ghosts can return to the world of the living to make amends for their own guilt.
A person's reaction to the appearance of ghosts largely depends on their behavior and the appearance they take. There are cases when a person with screams ran away from an incomprehensible vision, even when it appeared in the form of his beloved, but deceased mother. Ghosts rarely behave like entities trying to reach us from the other world. They sometimes just stand or hover near the eyewitness, not showing the slightest desire to say or show anything to him.
The intransigence of some ghosts, as it were, provokes some researchers to stick on them the label of lifeless scraps or frozen, dead images generated by consciousness. However, this is not the case, since the variety of forms of their behavior is quite large. Some of them appear as if without a specific purpose, and the eyewitness is unable to understand the intentions of the unusual guest.
In other cases, they show obvious signs of intelligence and a reasonably expressed idea, taking the initiative to achieve it. Sometimes ghosts look quite serious, but sometimes they behave either playfully, or submissively, or intimidating, or even demonic.
Ghosts often imitate human behavior and behave so naturally that the eyewitness does not know what he is dealing with. Most often they resemble humans in appearance, but rarely leave physical traces. So, according to one study in 1990, in 30 out of 40 cases studied, ghosts appeared and disappeared physically without a trace.
