A person learns about the presence of tonsils in his body - or in the medical terminology of tonsils - in early childhood.

As soon as you catch a serious cold, the tonsils immediately swell, narrowing the throat. Swelling, soreness and redness of the tonsils - all these symptoms accompany any sore throat and flu. Because of them, the attitude towards the glands has developed the most negative. It would seem that they only cause harm, preventing a person, already weakened by the disease, from swallowing, and sometimes breathing normally.

In the Soviet Union, this "sabotage" body was dealt with quickly. The tonsils were simply removed, and without anesthesia. This operation was rather unpleasant, but even worse, it was very common. In the 70-80s in medicine, it was believed that the body did not need tonsils. They were pulled out "for the prevention" of all kinds of colds.

Do you really need to remove the tonsils

About 20 years ago, this practice was recognized as erroneous. Removing tonsils in no way prevents colds. On the contrary, it opens a direct path for infection to the human body. The tonsils are a special paired organ composed of lymphoid tissue. The latter performs a very important function in the body - it produces cells responsible for immunity.

The tonsils are given to humans to protect against infections that can enter the lungs from the outside environment. When the glands become inflamed, they produce a large number of white blood cell cells that protect the body from an external "aggressor". Moreover, this paired organ performs a hematopoietic function. It is very important! The glands literally produce cells that form the normal blood composition.

Removing the tonsils "for preventive purposes" is tantamount to removing part of the liver. Both organs neutralize harm that can be done to the body. The liver neutralizes toxins, tonsils - viruses and bacteria. It has already been proven that a person with removed tonsils is 2 times more susceptible to all kinds of colds, a significant percentage of which occurs with complications.

To treat or not to treat?

Now it is extremely rare to appoint an operation to remove the tonsils. An indication for it may be some very complex and advanced disease, for example, chronic tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils with the formation of plugs in their loose surface). But in most cases, doctors still prefer conservative, or drug treatment. Pharmacology is now well developed enough to deal with the problem of inflamed glands.
