Valery Spiridonov, a 31-year-old resident of Vladimir, is preparing to become the first person to undergo a successful head transplant. However, skeptics began to sound the alarm and argue that Valery's head after the operation will not be able to coexist with someone else's body.
Experts in the field of neurosurgery argue that a number of technological and scientific factors may interfere with the implementation of the plans for Spiridonov and the Italian surgeon Sergio Canavero.
Criticizing HEAVEN (this is how Canavero called the head transplant operation), experts argue that the immunity of another person can reject Spiridonov's head, which is why the Russian will have to get hooked on drugs that can harm the body and affect the appearance of malignant tumors.
Experts also fear that Spiridonov may cease to be himself - a head transplant may be dangerous for his psyche, and even if the operation is successful, he will most likely simulate the behavior of his donor and begin to live his life.
In addition, neurosurgeons are also asking an interesting question whether Spiridonov will be able to have offspring after a head transplant, but Canavero himself does not seem to have an answer to this question yet. The Italian surgeon, responding to the predictions of skeptics, only said that the operation really poses a certain risk, however, there is no question of copying the donor's behavior model and dependence on immunosuppressants, which can lead to complications.
It is already known that Sergio Canavero will conduct the world's first head transplant in Germany. The Italian surgeon has not yet decided on the date, only adding that he planned the operation at the end of 2017.
