There is no unambiguous interpretation of the name of Tartary. But the name is on the cards. There are only versions of what this name means. Some are not demonstrative, some have an element of logic. The first explanation that I heard: this territory was under the auspices of the Slavic Gods Tarkh and Tara. Therefore, the name Tar-Tariya. Version at the level of sacred information. If there were ancient sources where this is said, then we can take it into service. Maybe they were these sources.

In some of my articles, I wrote that the name of Tartary on old European maps is probably related to what was mined here. This was seen by European travelers and what they saw took root in the name. In other sources and on other maps - this territory is called: Asia, Scythia, Siberia. I decided to put this version in a separate article.

We will talk about the northern territories, which the Europeans designated as Grand Tartary (Great Tartary).

"Tar" - in English resin, tar. It turns out that this is the area where the resin was mined. But at that time, resin was called not only wood resin, but also tar, bitumen (oil), coming to the surface. But now nothing comes out of oil products to the surface. Can we say that there were such large-scale exits before? Yes. Here's my reasoning:

Map of deposits of black and brown coal on the territory of Russia.

There is a hypothesis of abiogenic origin of coals. I posted articles on this topic. I will not return to a detailed presentation of this hypothesis. On this topic, you can read the work of A. Sklyarov "Land without the Carboniferous period."

Here are photos of coal layers in sections:

How such a number of uniform thin layers of coal were formed can only be explained by the repeated release of oil products (bitumen), which impregnated the rock. And these layers quickly petrified. But bituminous sands are not:

The Alberta Oil Sands in Canada. The largest deposit. No petrification took place here

In most cases, coal deposits are associated with oil and gas:

During the existence of Tartary, it is likely that oil outflows were local. Perhaps there were no such large-scale coal deposits at that time. Oil was used in torches, in military affairs, and it was traded as a fuel. As they would say now, Tartaria was the largest supplier of this resin.

Examples of modern natural outcrops of oil to the surface:

An oil lake formed in Louisiana, USA. Associated with shale mining in Texas. But this is too far.

There are such exits even in Ukraine. I do not exclude that many are associated with shale oil, which they tried so hard to start producing there with the help of the United States. There is bituminous Peach Lake in Trinidad in Africa (area 40 hectares):

I believe that everything changed at once on the territory of Tartary, exits with the beginning of catastrophic events became large-scale. Not only oil came out, but also water, gases, clay with alternation:

All this spread over a huge territory. Only a flood of water is inappropriate for this area. There was mountain building, when water, mud, pebbles, gases came out from each hill and mountain. I found a source where one scientist came to this model of the formation of mountains and hills several hundred years ago.

Tartary was erased by these processes. We will not find even stone or brick from its cities. The European part of the continent got less. Cities and cultural heritage remained there. The cities were quickly rebuilt.

This is briefly part of my hypothesis. It will not be possible to comprehensively describe in one article. Although, it's time to combine all the articles into one big work with a lot of examples and facts.
