According to legend, the Eye of Horus, or as it is also called, the Eye of Ra, was a very powerful amulet. It was believed that this is the left eye of the supreme deity of Egypt. The deity himself was depicted as a man with a falcon's head. The Egyptians believed that with this eye it was possible to resurrect the dead.
Horus was the son of the god Osiris and the goddess Isis. He was born after Set, the god of destruction, cunningly killed his brother to become the head of the divine pantheon. Young Horus wanted to avenge the death of his father, who could not be resurrected because Seth had dismembered him. In a fight with Horus, the experienced Seth managed to deprive the young god of his left eye. But the god Anubis came to the aid of Horus, who was able to heal the knocked out eye of Horus. When the eye was healed, it began to possess the incredible power of resurrection. Horus decided to sacrifice this eye to resurrect his father. And as a result, he was able to grow back the body of his Osiris. But the father did not want to return to the world of the living. He appointed Horus as the supreme god, and he himself remained to rule the world of the dead.
Interestingly, the Scandinavians have a similar legend. In it, Odin also loses one eye, only in exchange asks for a drink from the source of eternal wisdom.
An amazing fact is that the story of the goddess Isis, who was hiding with little Horus from Seth, who was looking for her, is very similar to the story of the Virgin Mary forced to hide with little Jesus. As in Christian icons, Isis was portrayed with a baby in her arms. In Christianity, the symbol of the eye of Horus, passed over as the all-seeing Eye. As a rule, it is framed by a triangle, which personifies the Holy Trinity.
Also, this symbol was actively used by occult sects and societies. In Masonic symbolism, this is one of the key symbols. It means enlightenment coming from the creator to people.
When the United States was just being created, the country needed its own symbols, so the founding fathers adopted ancient Egyptian and other ancient symbols.
