Europe is full of mysteries, not only on the surface, but also underground. The vast continent is dotted with hundreds of tunnels, about which scientists know almost nothing. Who was their creator and why are they needed?

Their dimensions are quite small for humans - they are no more than 1 meter and 20 centimeters high and 60 centimeters wide. The tunnels are connected into even narrower tunnels, the size of which is so scanty that a common man cannot make his way into them.

The age of the tunnels is almost impossible to determine, as no objects have been found in them. The approximate date of their construction is the beginning of the Middle Ages. It is because of the lack of at least some artifacts in them that scientists almost completely rule out the version that the tunnels served as hiding places or dwellings.

The mysterious passages also never appeared in any records of that time. They may have been part of a religious order that apparently did not publicize its existence.

There are also several more versions explaining the purpose of the tunnels. Perhaps they served to protect people from wild animals. It is also believed that the passages were necessary for travelers to safely reach any destination, regardless of wars, revolutions and climate.

The famous archaeologist Heinrich Kusch expressed the opinion that the tunnels appeared much earlier - about 3000 BC. He explains his theory by the fact that the entrances are located near the places of residence of the ancient people of that time. According to other sources, the age of the structures is 1500 years

In addition, the fact of the opening of all the tunnels is interesting. Some were discovered by scientists, others had long been known to the locals. And some of the passages were found in a very interesting way: once a herd of cows grazed in a meadow until one of them suddenly fell into a tunnel.

Today, mysterious holes are usually not discussed in scientific circles. They are not a big secret, but not a single study on tunnels has yet been officially published.

Now 500 tunnels have been discovered in Austria and 700 in Bavaria. Some of them deserve special attention of the locals and even got names. For example, one passage is called the goblin hole. Scientists believe that not all of the tunnels have been discovered yet - some of them are hidden underground, others have long been destroyed.

But still, the riddle of the tunnels defies any logical explanation: they are all too small and narrow, it is simply not possible to walk along them for a long time. There is also very little air underground and it will not work there for a long time. It seems as if all the tales of gnomes and goblins once came true, and it was these creatures that became the full-fledged owners of the underworld.
