Who or what the Dark Guardians are, nobody knows. Where these elusive creatures came from and where they go remains a mystery. They leave no traces, although they are mentioned in a number of ancient legends and are well known in several states of the United States.
The Dark Sentinels are giant, human-like ghosts that can only be seen at dusk, standing against the backdrop of the night sky along the ridges and peaks of the ridge. When spotted, the creatures are usually seen staring into the open air of the mountains, seemingly at nothing special, before disappearing into thin air, sometimes right in front of the audience.

In our time, there are people who say that they have encountered the Dark Guardian, but what these gigantic creatures are looking for or observing is beyond anyone's understanding. There is no scientific explanation, only speculation.
The book "Strange California" says that the Chumash Indians first spoke of them in legends, and their rock artists painted them on their colorful wall paintings.
Later legendary author John Steinbeck described them in his story "Flight".
Also in 1937, poet Robinson Jeffers referred to them in his poem "You Gave Me Such Advice" as "forms that look like people, but certainly not people."

In the mid-sixties, a local Monterey resident who was the former headmaster of a local high school saw them while hiking in the mountains. He had enough time to study the dark figure, see her clothes, and notice how this figure was studying the mountains in a strange way. The Dark Guardians are sometimes referred to as the Ancients. They predate the white man's arrival in America, and all Native American tribes have stories about them. It is said that Spanish explorers encountered these mysterious creatures, and several Mexican soldiers reported seeing them.
