The Italian seismologist Dario Tedesco, who has been studying Nyiragongo for the past 15 years, has drawn the attention of the scientific community to the problem. “There is no doubt that the eruption will take place in the very near future. Goma is the most dangerous city on earth,”he said. The specialist recalled that in 2002 Nyiragongo was already the cause of the disaster. Then the lava of the volcano destroyed 14 thousand buildings of the city, and 350 thousand residents had to flee.

It is not yet known whether the eruption of Nyiragongo will cause a global aviation collapse, as happened due to the Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Recall that a volcano with a difficult to pronounce name, located under the Icelandic glacier, for almost a month disrupted air traffic throughout Europe. The problem was ash clouds, which could theoretically cause malfunctions in aircraft engines.

As a result, the area covered with lava was 1.3 sq. kilometers. On April 13, a new crack formed and a new eruption followed, and by April 16 the height of the ash column exceeded 13 kilometers. According to the estimates of the International Air Transport Association, the daily losses of airlines from flight cancellations amounted to at least $ 200 million.
