This pentagonal star-shaped structure, one of the most powerful and fortified in Northern Europe, was built in the 17th century, but still retains the status of a military facility and is administered by the Danish Ministry of Defense. There are no stone walls and towers, but high embankments remain, and ancient cannons stand on them.
Fortifications of this type became widespread in the 16th century in Italy, when cannons began to dominate the battlefields and the old type of fortress walls (usually in the form of a ring) were easily destroyed by direct fire. Here, the shells fired tangentially, and the walls covered one another.
The Kastellet fortress, in the east of the Danish capital, was built under Frederick III and reconstructed in 1989-1999. It is now a public park, although the grounds and buildings still belong to the Danish Ministry of Defense.
The fort is guarded daily and hourly by the Royal Guards, soldiers still live in the barracks, and public access is limited. However, everything around the fortress has long become a favorite vacation spot for Copenhagen residents - a wonderful public park: fans of a healthy lifestyle jog along the contour paths of Kastellet, many birds live here, including blue jays and white swans, which children adore to feed.
