A 7-meter pyramid rises deep in the forest between the cities of Zwetl and Groß-Gerungs (Austria). The pyramid consists of loosely stacked stones in the form of a round cake-like layer. It is the only known structure of its kind found in Central Europe.
The origin and age of the pyramid are unknown. Some consider it to be an ancient Germanic site, however this is unlikely as archaeological evidence does not support this and there have been no known prehistoric or early settlements in the area.
It is more likely that the pyramid has a more modern heritage. In 1747, Leopold Christophe founded a Masonic lodge at Rosenau Castle. The pyramid may have served as a signal station for a secret organization. Ruins of walls have been found nearby, and the pyramid may have been part of a much larger complex.
