Today, it is believed that a person mastered the art of building and began to erect buildings and architectural monuments only with the transition to agriculture and the associated sedentary and semi-sedentary habitat. How, when and why this happened is one of the most interesting questions in the history of human development.
According to Jacques Jaubert from the University of Bordeaux (France), for this reason, few people tried to look for any architectural traces associated with the Neanderthals - as scientists believed, these ancient people were exclusively hunter-gatherers who constantly migrated and did not need any buildings. -or kind.
It turned out that this is not at all the case! Jaubert and his colleagues discovered traces of a giant structure, created by human hands, in the Brunickel Cave in southwestern France. The age of the rocks in which traces of a series of concentric circles of stones were found is 175 thousand years, which means that it was not built by our ancestors, but by the Neanderthals.
This building, a kind of Neanderthal "Stonehenge", is a circle 6.7 meters in diameter, assembled from four layers of "bricks" made from burnt pieces of stalagmites, which the ancient builders probably mined in the cave itself. There are several other similar structures within and near this circle, within which animal bones were found.
Scientists believe that some of the smaller structures most likely represented hearths on which food was prepared, but the purpose of the large circle remains a mystery to us. This "stonehenge" could play both some kind of religious role in the life of Brunickel's inhabitants, and some unknown functions.
In any case, this building, according to Jaubert and his colleagues, claims to be the oldest architectural structure in the history of mankind. She talks about the complex organization of Neanderthal communities, which allowed them to build such structures, which once again refutes the myth that Neanderthals were more stupid and less developed than our Cro-Magnon ancestors.
