Scientists have figured out what today's youth can learn from the older generation.
Young people all the time strive to push the elders to the dustbin of history. In the digital revolution, knowledge and experience quickly become obsolete. How can aksakals compete with representatives of the digital generation in terms of their ability to work with computer programs and mobile applications? But, as you know, soon there will be no cinema or theater - one continuous Internet! However, it turned out that there is still a huge field of activity, where the old robbers will give odds to the young men.
The study, which was commissioned by the British medical company Bupa, involved 2,000 people of different ages. At the same time, experts identified 40 skills and abilities in which people aged 55+ are unmatched, and young people nervously smoke on the sidelines (see table).
Undeniable leadership of "experienced" in terms of culinary skills: for example, 42.78% of them are able to bake a cake without looking into the recipe book. Among the representatives of generation Z (those who were born after 1995) such magicians are only 24.77%. Almost 40 percent of young people were unable to distinguish the position of the hands on the dial - they are so used to using watches with a digital display!
It is clear that the priority of grandparents in this area is due to a change in lifestyle. Today people do not like to cook themselves, they are fond of semi-finished products, ready-made meals and fast food. And the good old watches have left the historical scene as a device for measuring time; they have occupied the niche of an expensive accessory. Much more interesting is another conclusion of the researchers: people have become extremely dependent on electronic assistants. Young people will be brutally beaten if they compete with the elders in the art of competently writing texts without using spelling checkers. It is difficult for them to multiply without a calculator, and if the navigator breaks down, they will not be able to navigate using a conventional topographic map. Representatives of the digital generation are morally ready to capitulate to the most insignificant everyday problem:having to repair the plug or electrical outlet will bewilder them.
“Ancestors” in this sense people are much more self-sufficient than their descendants, who are in a hurry to ask the Internet for advice on every occasion. People are aware of this dependence on the World Wide Web and are weighed down by it.
“Approximately 87 percent of the survey participants admitted that they would like to have more practical knowledge and skills in order to rely less on Internet help,” says Joan Elliot, one of the survey organizers. “Our work demonstrates that many useful skills are lost today and are not passed down from generation to generation. In fact, young people have a lot to learn from their elders.
