Polish archaeologists have discovered three extremely unusual burials, writes the edition Nauka w Polsce, on the pages of which material appeared about the remains of medieval people who were executed, probably on charges of vampirism.
Superstitious medieval townsfolk often declared this or that person who did not fit into the standard model of society, a sorcerer or a vampire. Apparently this is what happened to the three inhabitants of the village of Guzhitsa, who lived in the thirteenth - fourteenth centuries.
People buried on the outskirts of the cemetery were killed and then beheaded. One of the skulls was crushed by stones - this was done so that the dead would certainly not come to life.
“On the bones were found traces of deep and extensive punctures, made, presumably, wooden stakes - that is, we are dealing with people who were considered vampires. This is also indicated by the great depth at which the bones lay,”archaeologists say.
They add that for some reason the bones of the skeletons were mixed, for example, the left leg lay in place of the right, and vice versa. Two skeletons belonging to a man and a woman are distinguished by noticeable defects - their owners were hunchbacked. The woman, by the way, lay face down in the grave.
