Modern wearables are typically designed for step counting, heart rate measurements and displaying notifications. The Embr Wave bracelet is designed for a completely different purpose. It keeps you cool when it's too hot and keeps you warm in cooler weather. Embr Wave is a personal thermostat.
The Embr Wave bracelet works automatically, depending on the user's needs. The idea is that after enabling it, it makes the user feel more comfortable. Within three minutes after activation, a sensation of temperature change by several degrees is created.
Sam Shames, CEO of Embr Labs, explains how his device works because the perception of temperature is very subjective. It all comes down to the temperature of the skin, and if you put something colder or warmer on it, people feel more comfortable.
The idea for the product originated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2013. While working in the laboratory, Shames and his colleagues suffered constantly from the cold. They came up with Embr Wave and submitted it to the Intel Make it Wearable competition. In 2017, a successful Kickstarter campaign was launched that raised $ 630K. Embr Labs' investors include Intel and Bose. With their help, Embr Wave will start selling in March next year for $ 300.
The product is intended for people who often feel uncomfortable due to heat or cold. Our colleague from Business Insider turned out to be one of those people, and he tried Embr Wave on himself.
To turn on the bracelet, you need to click on a special area, then select the left or right side to press. The left side is for cooling and the right for warming. After that, within five or three minutes, respectively, you will feel the temperature change. Embr Wave changes it with nice waves.
The big advantage of the device is the absence of the need to wear it constantly. It is not very compact or comfortable to carry, but it can be put on exactly when you need it. And also, users assure that it really works. The benefits of Embr Wave may not be that important to buying it for $ 300, but it can make your time more comfortable.
