This is the deepest fresh water body on the territory of the peninsula. Its depth is 148 meters and covers an area of 242 square kilometers. 25 streams and rather large rivers flow into it. Only one river flows out of the river - Kronotskaya. The river is shallow and rapids. Lake Kronotskoye is a unique place for research. Ichthyologists, biologists, ecologists, ufologists, scientists of different directions have firmly established themselves in this amazing place for a scrupulous study of this mysterious land. The main inhabitants of the lake are two forms of lacustrine salmon and three forms of char.

This wonderful lake is also a habitat for salmon, which, due to natural conditions, does not go to spawn in the ocean (there are many places impassable for fish in the flowing only river, the result of volcanic activity that gave rise to this lake). So far, Lake Kronotskoye has not been fully explored and there are still many blank spots and questions in it. Scientific expeditions of scientists, biologists and geographers are being created. Scientists have mapped the bottom. Interesting information was obtained on the ichthyofauna and its abundance. In 2010, scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences, headed by Grigory Markovich, studied the lake.

Back in 1774-75, there were references to this amazing lake Kronotskoye in the descriptions of Krasheninnikov and Steller. More thorough studies began in the middle of the last century. In 1966-73, a scientific expedition of Lenhydroproject carried out a great deal of work to study the reservoir for the construction of a hydroelectric power station. But the project was not implemented, fortunately.
