It is not for nothing that they say that the resort islands are the remnants of Atlantis. Spanish scientists have proved that 22 thousand years ago there was much more land here.

It is not for nothing that they say that the Canary Islands are the remnants of Atlantis! There the island really drowned. Not the same as with hotels and tourists. And not now. But it is a real island, similar in size to those where travelers, including Russian, rest now.

Scientists from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and the University of Barcelona (Instituto Español de Oceanografía and Universidad de Barcelona) have proved that in the Atlantic Ocean 90 km northeast of Lanzarote, that is, closer to Africa, there used to be another large island - Concepcion (La Concepción).

Now there is a huge seamount, the largest in this area. Its bottom is at a depth of 2400 meters, and the summit does not reach the ocean surface only 158 meters. The origin of the ex-island is volcanic, like all the existing islands of the Canary archipelago.

The sunken island was formed 18 million years ago - of all the islands of the Canary archipelago, only Fuerteventura is older, the rest appeared later. Why did you drown?

First, erosion gradually destroyed the top of the mountain. The traces of exposure to the air also became one of the proofs that the seamount was once an island.

Secondly, the sea level has risen. Concepcion was an island 22 thousand years ago. Then, during the Ice Age, huge bodies of water were frozen, and the ocean level was noticeably lower than it is now.

Now, by the way, Konspesion cannot be called uninhabited either - the seamount stands in the way of the ocean currents, a special "microclimate" is formed here, in which many species of fish feel great, including sharks, corals, turtles and other inhabitants of the deep sea.
