This idea was implemented in China, where residents will no longer have to carry a travel card or money to travel in underground transport.
Testing of the technology began in the city of Shenzhen, where at one of the stations it became possible to pay for the fare … for one person only. To get on the metro, passengers just need to go to special turnstiles. The screen will display not only a confirmation photo of the face, but also travel analytics, including the length of stay in the metro.
Before using the system, you must register and link a payment method, after which the money will be debited automatically. This type of “buying a pass” can significantly speed up passenger traffic in the metro, since it will take less time to pay for travel.
The face recognition system is based on Huawei's 5G network, as well as algorithms through which artificial intelligence recognizes passengers' faces. Why are the latest generation networks used? According to the management of the metro, 5G makes this method of fare much more economical for the city.
Of course, so far the system is working only at one station in a test mode, but in the future it is planned to introduce face recognition at other passenger facilities. What happens if the system makes a mistake and recognizes another instead of one person is not specified.
