In 1820, the American Journal of Science published an excerpt from the book Mineralogy by the French scientist Count Bournon. This excerpt referred to an interesting find made by French workers at the end of the 18th century … “During 1786, 1787 and 1788, workers mined in a quarry near the French town of Aix-en-Provence, stone for an extensive rebuilding of the building Palace of Justice.
At first, no extraneous inclusions were found, but at a depth of 12-15 meters, fragments of columns and fragments of semi-finished stone were found - the very one that was mined in the quarry.
There were also found coins, hammer handles, other wooden tools or their fragments. But the first thing that caught the attention of the workers was a plank about an inch (2.5 cm) thick and seven to eight feet (2.1 to 2.4 meters) long. Although it was smashed to pieces, none of them were missing, so it was easy to restore either the board or the slab. It turned out that this is a shield - similar to those that are used in our time in construction and quarries; and in exactly the same way it was worn, had the same rounded shape and uneven edges.
Partially or completely processed stone blocks did not undergo any changes, but fragments of the shield, wooden tools and their fragments turned into agate - a very elegant, pleasant color. So, at a depth of fifty feet under eleven layers of dense limestone, traces of the labor of human hands were found, and each of the objects found testified that the work was carried out right here, at the place of discovery of these objects.
That is, a person visited here long before several limestone horizons were formed, and this person stood at such a high level of development that he already knew arts and crafts, knew how to process stone and make columns out of it”.
