American scientists from the University of Michigan discovered a new dwarf planet in the solar system. Information on observations of the celestial body is available on the website of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), briefly reported by The Washington Post.

The dwarf planet 2014 UZ224 moves in a highly elongated orbit at a distance of 38-180 astronomical units from the Sun. A celestial body makes a full revolution around the star in 1136 years. The 2014 UZ224 reaches 420-1180 kilometers in diameter.

The dwarf planet is in orbit in the scattered disk - a remote region of the solar system that is populated by a small number of icy celestial bodies. The boundary of this region closest to the luminary falls on the Kuiper belt, which begins behind the orbit of Neptune.

The dwarf planet is currently about 91 astronomical units from the Sun. Celestial body 2014 UZ224 was first discovered on August 19, 2014. The opening was announced on October 11, 2016.

There are eight planets in the solar system, according to the IAU. The largest and most massive of them is Jupiter. In January 2016, American scientists discovered a candidate for the title of the ninth planet. Also, to date, about 50 candidates for dwarf planets are known.
