American astronomer Antonio Paris has found a definitive explanation for the origin of the extraterrestrial signal Wow! A related study was published in the Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, briefly reported by Popular Mechanics.
Paris was able to detect several signals similar to Wow! All of them were produced by comets (266P / Christensen, P / 2013 EW90 (Tenagra), P / 2016 J1-A (PANSTARRS) and 237P / LINEAR), which indicates their natural origin.
Paris's work, he says, has been going on for the past two years and confirms his hypothesis that the original Wow! produced by comet 266P / Christensen (or P / 2008 Y2 - it can only be observed in 2018), the transit of which was observed from July 27 to August 15, 1977 in the vicinity of the Chi group of stars of the Sagittarius constellation.
Signal Wow! (Russian "Oho!") approximately corresponds to a hydrogen line (with a frequency of about 1420 megahertz and a wavelength of about 21 centimeters). It was recorded on August 15, 1977 by the Ohio State University Big Ear radio telescope and lasted 72 seconds.
