American scientists have found a promising method of increasing life expectancy, which, in their opinion, will be used in the future. A related study was published in the journal Cell, briefly reported by EurekAlert !.
Experts believe that people will be able to take dietary supplements containing bacteria derived from the intestine. Already today, according to a study by specialists, there are strains of microorganisms that slow down the growth of cancerous tumors and the accumulation of beta-amyloids - compounds associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease.
Scientists came to similar conclusions after conducting experiments on a free-living nematode (Caenorhabditis elegans) - a simple organism that simulates human aging. The body of the worms contained E. coli; in these bacteria, experts monitored the activity of about four thousand genes. Removal of 29 of them increased the lifespan of the nematode, and activation of 12 was associated with slowing the growth of cancerous tumors and preventing the accumulation of beta-amyloids.
The researchers believe that, based on these results, the development of bacterial drugs that slow down the aging process is possible in the future.
