Scientists from the Erasmus University of Rotterdam Medical Center in the Netherlands have successfully tested an anti-aging drug in mice, according to the journal Cell.
As a person gets older, senescent cells accumulate in the tissues, the article says. According to scientists, they contribute to the development of diseases such as arthritis and diabetes. The "elixir of youth" developed by the Netherlands destroys these cells, which allows you to reverse the aging process. The substance contains a peptide that induces senescent cells to self-destruct.
In old mice, physical endurance increased after application of the drug - the researchers noted that the rodents began to spend more time running in the "wheel". In addition, the distance that the animals covered during the tests, after taking the "elixir of youth", almost doubled.
Scientists also recorded an improvement in the functioning of the internal organs of mice. Even the fur of the experimental rodents looked better.
The authors of the study note that the drug created may be effective in the fight against cancer. The next stage will be testing the novelty on humans.
