In recent years, local ethnographers, activists and researchers of their native land have begun to study the myth of ancient Hyperborea, a legendary civilization that existed in the North of Europe. Numerous artifacts found in the vicinity of Kovdor give local residents good reason to call their city the capital of Hyperborea. The townspeople chose the great serpent Jormungand mentioned in the Old Scandinavian epic as their symbol. His image was found on a runestone in Kovdor (the word Kovdor itself comes from the Sami kuvt - "serpent").
The popularity of the city of Kovdor as a historical region of Hyperborea and a source of unique artifacts testifying to the existence of a mythical country on the territory of the Kola Peninsula. Journalists, bloggers, travelers, as well as seekers of unusual discoveries come to the polar town to study and get acquainted with the historical objects of Hyperborea. In accordance with ancient traditions, the inhabitants of the city met Jormungand, who was waking up that day, and appeased the patron saint of Hyperborea with generous gifts.
In addition, this year Kovdor will receive the status of a territory of advanced socio-economic development (TASED). An agreement on interaction between the government of the Murmansk region, the administration of the Kovdorsky district and the Mineral and Chemical Company EuroChem was signed at the Russian Investment Forum in Sochi. This document will help the city to implement a new tourism project Kovdor - the capital of Hyperborea by creating new jobs and tourism services, create the most favorable conditions for the implementation of investment projects, the development of new industries and services, and improve the quality of life of the population. The final package of application documents for the creation of a territory of advanced social and economic development will be sent to the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia.
