In our time, about 28 such temples and churches have survived from the sunset of the Viking era. The main distinguishing feature of these monasteries is the combination of Christian features with Scandinavian mythology and paganism. As you know, in Norway it was very difficult to accept Christianity, so this was strongly reflected in the buildings.
I present to you one of the most ancient stakes in Borgunn:
It was built presumably in 1150-1180 in honor of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called. The church is made of ash, among other things a sacred tree in Scandinavian mythology. It was Yggdrasil ash that was the universe of the Scandinavian pagans.
No metal parts were used during the construction! All 2000 pieces were made of wood. And the church was erected with the help of a frame, which was first assembled on the ground and only then rose. Therefore, the church can be called frame or mast. Also, the structure consists of 3 naves, and the roof was tiled.

Bright colors did not remain due to the resinous compounds that were preserved here in the twentieth century. They covered everything with their dark color, and now we can only talk about former contrasts. Thus, the frescoes and paintings were destroyed, even from the outside the building looks black. However, other decorative and technological aspects have been preserved.

Nowadays, inside the church there are St. Andrew's crosses, some old benches and a wardrobe. Of the special things you can find there an altar built around the 17th century and a pulpit from the 16th century.
On the roof you can see sculptures of dragons, which the pagans also used on the stems (on the nose) of their drakkar ships. And all this is combined with Christian crosses.
Also, upon close inspection on the doors of the western portal, near the iron handles with numerous snake heads, one can see runic charm signs, apparently carved to protect the doors from enemies.
The headquarters in Borgunn was plundered - not even a single crucifix remained. At the moment, this is only a museum and they have not come here for a long time. But there is a new church nearby, similar to the original, where services are held.
