The researchers are confident that they have found the wreckage of the ship "Endeavor", on which the English cartographer and discoverer James Cook reached the shores of Australia in 1770. Reported on Tuesday, May 3, CNN.
Employees of the non-profit organization Rhode Island Marine Archeology Project (RIMP) say they were able to find the wreckage near Newport, Rhode Island, USA. RIMP executive director Kathy Abbass said that after Cook's expedition, Endeavor was named Lord Sandwich.
The organization believes that the ship was sunk by the British in shallow water in 1778, along with 12 other ships in anticipation of the storming of Rhode Island during the blockade of Narragansett Bay. RIMP notes that they found nine sites with debris. Moreover, in one of them, five ships were sunk at once, including the "Lord Sandwich".
"All 13 ships sunk in Newport during the revolution are important to American history," the researchers said, according to BBC News. Now they plan to study the terrain and parts of each ship in more detail to determine exactly which of the wreckage belongs to Endeavor.
Cook commanded the Endeavor on her first voyage around the world from 1768 to 1771. The vessel, which had a shallow draft, was specially re-equipped for a scientific expedition.
